My Renaissance Shawl

I put up this page to show-off my new Renaissance Shawl! The pattern is from Not Just Plain Jane Knits, and I knit the shawl in “Soft Touch Ultra 100% Wool Fingering” from Shelridge Farm. The color is “Clover Flower.”

I've mentioned this shawl on the Knitted-Lace list several times, and a number of people asked for pictures to see the shape and detail of the shawl. I took these photos while the shawl was blocked out on my bed. I apologize for the somewhat fuzzy quality of the pictures. I was using a suboptimal digital camera in a rather dim room.

Overview of Shawl

When I first got this pattern, and saw page after page of written instructions, I confess I thought I could not possibly knit it without a chart. I did start charting the pattern, but could quickly see that the rate of increase was going to make a full chart difficult. It's certainly possible, but I need to think more about it. I did maybe 20 rows of the chart and started the shawl, and by the time I reached the end of my chart, I was very much enjoying working on it. I didn't have time just then to solve the charting problems, so I began working from the written pattern. I found the lace pattern so intuitive that I just continued from the written instructions and had finished the shawl within a matter of days.

I still have plans to chart the pattern, and am also thinking about making a second shawl. I want to make my second shawl longer, probably by adding another row or two of the leaf shapes, as well as additional rows of mesh. This shawl is really just a shoulder shawl on me, the edging hitting just above my waist. The pattern says it's 24” deep at the center back, and I think that's about what mine turned out. As you can see if you look closely, each pair of leaves in the upper tier is increased to form another pair of leaves on the second tier. I think it would be easy enough to keep these increases going, but we'll see!
